China Tourist Visa vs Business Visa: Which One Do You Need?

Pakistan and China have close travel and trade links, and many Pakistanis visit China for sightseeing, trade fairs and business meetings. The most important decision comes before any paperwork: choosing the right visa category for what you will actually do.

Tourist visa (L)

Choose a tourist visa if your trip is for:

  • Sightseeing and holidays — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an and beyond
  • Visiting friends, without any business activity

Typical supporting documents include your flight reservation, hotel bookings, a travel itinerary, and proof of your job or business and finances.

Business visa (M)

Choose a business visa if you will:

  • Meet suppliers, visit factories or negotiate deals
  • Attend trade fairs such as the Canton Fair
  • Carry out other commercial activities

A business visa usually needs an invitation letter from a company in China, with details of the inviting company, the purpose of your visit and your travel dates, along with your own company documents.

Tip: If your trip mixes sightseeing with business meetings, apply for the business visa. Saying "tourism" while planning to visit factories can cause problems at the border or with future applications.

How the application works

Applications from Pakistan are made through the official Chinese visa application service centres. You usually fill in the online application form, book an appointment, and submit your documents and biometrics in person. Always check the official website for the current process.

Documents for both categories

  • Passport valid for at least six months, with blank pages
  • Completed online application form and confirmation page
  • Recent photograph meeting the size and background rules
  • CNIC copy
  • Flight reservation and hotel bookings (or invitation letter for business)

Tips for trade-fair visitors

  • Apply early — demand rises sharply before major fairs
  • Book hotels near the fair venue well in advance
  • Carry printed copies of your invitation letter and fair registration
